StarStarStarStarStar A long time coming but worth it!

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Seemed like this was forever rumored and promised, but took a long time to get to market. But it works perfectly in my horizontal dropouts. I had a constant problem with the drive-side of my rear wheel being pulled forward no matter how tight I made the quick release. Was contemplating selling the bike it was so frustrating. The Hurdy Gurdy eliminated all problems and I'm in love with my awesome bike once again!

Cons

None at all!

StarStarStarStarStar great chain tensioner

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Quality material, easy to install, and holds the rear wheel securely in place. Great to be able to fine tune chain tension.

Cons

None

Other Thoughts

Works on front facing horizontal dropouts. For rear facing track dropouts get the Surly Tug Nut. Don't over tighten if you're using a freewheel.

StarStarStarStarStar Worth it!

Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Excellent machining--close tolerances but not too tight--easy to adjust.

Very strong materials--I am 275 pounds with my CamelBak Mule, water and tools. I have an old CroMo hard tail (Diamondback Sorrento) that is about the only thing large and strong enough for my 6'5" frame. Total riding weight is just over 300 pounds.

Before the Hurdy Gurdy, I would routinely twist the rear hub right out of the dropouts (which are a really stupid design--they face straight forward) during hard climbs. No more.

Definitely pricey, but a perfect solution. Works with many different dropout configurations, due to a generous range of motion and a reversible machined insert that shifts hole position.

Cons

Price.

Other Thoughts

Excellent instructions.

StarStarStarStarStar Does your rear wheels walk forward when going hard? Get this

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Got horizontal or semi-horizontal dropouts?
did you stretch your steel frame from 126 to 130mm? Didn't get the dropouts aligned like me?
Perhaps you just have a problem with your rear wheels walking forward.
This installs easy and guarantees that your wheels won't move at ALL.
Really well constructed.

Cons

your rear wheels won't be 'quick release' anymore. You have to remove the QRs entirely to get the wheels out now. But when you put them back in, they'll be exactly where you wanted them.

Other Thoughts

Really awesome, affordable product that does exactly what it needs to do.

My confidence giving it my all going up hills without having my rear wheel walk out on me

StarStarStarStarStar Just what the Dr ordered

Pros

This little device solved my wheel slippage problem just like Surly intended. Good, quality stuff as expected from my favorite frame maker.

Cons

No drawbacks, but Surly should include these with their Crosscheck framesets.

StarStarStarStarStar Hurdy Gurdy

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Bought the Hurdy Gurdy so that I could convert an old steel Masi into a fixie/single speed using a White Industry ONE hub and crank set. The old road MASI had horizontal dropouts that opened up towards the front and not the other way. The washer bolt on the Hurdy Gurdy had to be drilled out a few millimeters by my machinist at work to fit the White Industry hub bolt. However, once all this was complete, the system worked beautifully. I am also running a 1/4" Azumi track chain. Have been riding it everyday with a huge smile on my face.

Cons

Accept for the slight modification above, I can see no negative issues. Just make sure you are clear about some of the dimensions and what you are trying to accomplish before you buy.
