StarStarStarStarStar Great trunk, durable and holds a lot.

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Very durable. Holds all my tools, first aid kit, inner tubes, pump, lock, gloves, snacks and still has room for a gallon of milk if I stop at the store on my way home.

Cons

None

StarStarStarStarStar Awesome!

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Great bag, abundant storage, multiple pockets, expandable, reflective, and more than I hoped for when I purchased it. High quality and good looking. Clips onto my rack securely, and comes off with ease. Well designed.

Cons

I don't think they make this exact model anymore. :-(

StarStarStarStarStar Good stuff!

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: average

This systems work well on my road bike. I commute to work on a road bike. I have been having problems with my neck and I wanted to get rid of my back pack. This was the perfect alternative! I'm able to keep an 11'' apple lap top along with a book, several small snacks and various bike tools. I didn't want to commit to a full rack and this was perfect.

StarStarStarStarStar Good commuter bag

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

- easy attachment
- well built

Cons

- it is cumbersome to carry on the shoulder
- opening could be wider

Other Thoughts

I use it for everyday commute. It is just big enough to fit a set of clothes to change and a small lunch box when the top is expanded. It is somewhat narrow, so clothes need to be folded tightly.
The side pocket are great for small items, I have one for mini pump, some tools and lights and the other one for phone and wallet. The walls are hard, so the main compartment doesn't stretch.
Make sure it is properly attached, once I didn't push it in all the way and I could have lost it.

StarStarStarStarStar Great product

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

I patrol trails for the county park system. I carry med kit, bike tools, binoculars, spare water, food etc. in the trunk bag. After 1000 miles on the trail, it shows no sign of wear and is keeping its shape perfectly. I love the easy on / off feature. If I need to leave the bike, I can jus pop the bag off and bring it with me.

Cons

Not the cheapest bag out there. You get what you pay for.

StarStarStarStarStar Very nice trunk bag, quality seems very good

Cons

None.

Other Thoughts

Easy on/off with the matching rack.

StarStarStarStarStar Large Bag----Holds Everything I need

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

The bag is very well made---I have noticed no wear during 3 years of use.
Holds a huge amount---In the side compartments, I can carry a tube, patch kit, pump, tools and there is about a third of the space still unused.

The main compartment is large enough to carry 4 32oz bottles of fluid with space left over for food. Cold stuff in the bag stays cold for quite a while.

Fits very securely into the dedicated rack.

Cons

If you fill all the space up it gets heavy.

Other Thoughts

If you ride where you have to take care of yourself, this bag will give you space to carry what you need.

StarStarStarStarStar Do not bike without it

Pros

Perfect bag for a day trip. Well built. Great price too.

Other Thoughts

The rear strap for a taillight could be placed a little higher on bag.

StarStarStarStarStar My MTB has junk in the trunk!

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat low

Pros

Solid, durable, and so nice not packing items on my back! Must buy if your commuting around. Just big enough to handle the daily commute without being over loaded!

Cons

My MTB doesn't look as sleek. ??

Other Thoughts

It helps protect your back side during rainy weather!

StarStarStarStarStar Excellent Functionality

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

- durable
- practical
- shoulder strap
- easy use with MTX racks
- expandable top provides extra storage capabilities

Cons

- haven't had it long enough to find any cons, really
- would be cool if it was insulated better

Other Thoughts

The weight distribution on your bike will be thrown off when you pack a bag of this size full of stuff. It will affect your balance as well as tire pressure, etc.

StarStarStarStarStar Awesome bag!

Cons

StarStarStarStarStar Nice bag for town trips.

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Great for quick trips to grocery store and day trips. Expands in height to fit a few groceries, including a gallon of milk.

Cons

Little large for everyday rides that don't require supplies. However, you can always just slide it off. I just don't want to have to fuss.

StarStarStarStarStar Topeak MTX TrunkBag DX

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

I've owned this bag for 1 month. Previously I owned the smaller cousin of this bag -- namely the EX version. I use(d) both bags daily, logging several thousand miles with them in the past 30 months. I much prefer this bag because of the expandable top and sturdier and roomier side pockets.

After about 2 years the top compartment zipper on the EX bag failed, when I over-stuffed the bag. (The zippers on the DX are the same...I really wish they were beefier; they are adequate if the bag is not over-stuffed, however.). The side pockets on the EX version were an expandable mesh with zippers on top....these worked pretty well until the mesh developed holes that got larger and larger due to the things I was carrying, rubbing against the mesh over the years. The DX pockets have solid side panels, are roomier and just a better, more durable design.

The interior volume of the main storage compartment of the DX is the same as the EX when not expanded.

Cons

Just treat the top compartment zipper and zipper that allows the bag to expand with a little care. Don't overstuff the bag, which will put pressure on the zippers. Also, don't "race" the zippers back and forth when opening and closing the bag too quickly. These suggestions should greatly prolong the life of the bag.

Other Thoughts

To me, it's the best bag system out there, with the dedicated and required Topeak rack. (If you are planning on also carrying a side pannier bag or basket, purchase the more expensive, touring version of the rack with the extra, lower horizontal bar for holding the pannier -- or else the pannier or basket will interfere with the ability to slide the Topeak bag onto the rack's track rail.) As I said, I use the Topeak bag and rack every day, and multiple times per day. Not having to deal with Velcro straps or bungee cords is a wonderful thing!..carrying the DX bag while walking around town is very easy too, with the handle at the back of the bag. This handle is well built and will last. I should note that the DX bag is a bit heavier than the EX...but not a deal killer.

Finally, I wanted to include why I did not buy the still larger bag above the DX with the built-in panniers.....1. The bag is heavier, making it less desirable to walk with...2. The panniers fold into the side pockets taking away storage room and co-mingling with the items being stored...3....The panniers will get dirty, wet and perhaps muddy. I didn't want to deal with cleaning them constantly before stowing them in the side pockets.

For my "pannier" I use a Basil brand metal basket that I keep locked to the Topeak rack...works well!
