Product:
Surly Long Haul Trucker Fork 700c w/ Logo Crown Black
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average
Pros
Fork arrived in a reasonable time, well packaged. Paint in perfect condition. I'm replacing a fork that had the stem cut too short. I put in more spacers and replaced head set. I'm now able to adjust the handlebar height and I'm much more comfortable.
Cons
None
Very nice fork, with one significant exception
by FC - Boston on January 6, 2022
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high
Pros
Available in multiple sizes, all with very long steerer tubes. Old-school styling. Lots of braze-ons for fenders, carriers, etc. Nice black paint job.
Cons
While it is designed for use with v-brakes, the brazed-on mounting studs are not replaceable. While the need to replace one is unlikely, if a bolt is miss-threaded or the stud is damaged in a crash, it would not be an easy fix for the average owner, or even local small shop. It would have been very user-friendly to use a screw-in stud, which would also make for a nicer install if the owner wants to use a crown-mounted caliper vs. v-brakes. One other complaint is that it is very hard to tell if the axle is fully inserted due to a lip that blocks your line of sight when installing the wheel. Minor, but annoying.
Other Thoughts
Overall a very nice fork for the price, but I would have paid more to have replaceable brake mounting studs.
