Help! What do I need to know to buy a trainer?
If you're living in an apartment, you're going to have to consider the noise factor if you want to be a good neighbor. That pretty much means you'll want to look at
magnetic trainers
since magnetic resistance creates little additional noise.
The down-side of magnetic resistance trainers is that the resistance isn't progressive. That means that the faster you go, the easier it gets, which isn't very realistic, and doesn't provide for the best workout. The trainers overcome this by having multiple resistance settings that you can switch between. Of course, you probably won't know what the right resistance is until you've started your workout, so you'll want to consider a model with a remote so you can change the resistance levels without dismounting.
Fluid trainers
can also work for apartment living. The noise level is pretty comparable to the magnetic models, and they have the added benefit of providing
progressive resistance
. The price is usually a little higher, but it might be worth it if you want a more road-like experience.
No matter what type of trainer you get, you should be prepared for at least some noise during your workout. At a bare minimum, you should be prepared for same level of noise that your cycle would generate outside. The type of trainer you choose will not affect the sound of your pedaling, so if you need it as quiet as possible, you'll want to look at getting a
trainer mat
. The mats are designed to absorb some of the vibrations and noises, and have the added benefit of protecting your floors from bike grime and sweat.
If noise is not an issue, and you're on a budget, then you'll want to consider
wind trainers
. Though loud, they do provide good progressive resistance and are almost always the cheapest option.
Other Bicycle Trainer Tips...
Only use smooth tires with trainers and rollers. This is essential for tire drive models, as they will burn through or possibly not operate at all with beaded tires. There is some wiggle room on this rule with rim drive models, which don't touch the tire, but old, bald tires are recommended whenever possible.
Use a riser block to lift your front wheel off the floor. Some blocks can be configured to a more steep angle to emulate hill-climbing.
The floor beneath your trainer will get dirty. If used, trainers will make you sweat. Trainers also have moving parts that are greased, and, let's face it, if your cycle was spotless, you probably wouldn't be interested in using a trainer. Protect your floors with a
sweat net
or
training mat
.
Rollers
are not for beginners. Rollers allow some side-to-side movement, which can make for a more realistic training session, but this also makes them more difficult to use. If you do choose to go with a roller, make sure you have plenty of room away from breakables, as it may take some practice to get the hang of it. One alternative to rollers is the Rock 'N Roll Trainer, which is the first trainer to allow side-to-side movement.
Consider getting an extreme video. Training, like any other form of indoor-exercise, can be a bit dull. Loud music, exciting
videos
are much better at keeping you active than watching the news or other TV shows.
