StarStarStarStarStar Worked as advertised.

by Mike of South Prince George, VA
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Used in the rebuild of a RB front axle and so far, so good.

Other Thoughts

It's a good thing there are a lot of them in the bottle because the pesky things are good at hiding from you.

StarStarStarStarStar Fresh grease wants fresh bearings

by Pete from NJ
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

High quality, inexpensive enough that if you are cracking a hub or bottom bracket or headset or whatever, rather than try to evaluate and re-use the old bearings, just toss in some shiny new ones at this price. Not so much more expensive than the lower quality (higher number grade, ie grade 300) that it should deter you from going for these grade 25's. A cracked bearing can ruin a comparitively more expensive and more difficult to replace hub or bottom bracket or headset. I am guessing that higher quality means less prone to breaking, pitting, or other destruction, as well as each bearing being closer to exact dimensions.

Cons

A nit - pointy tip bottle? Why? I don't think you can cut the tip to allow bearings to come out without cutting too far down to not be able to use the little cap. I could be wrong though.

Also - while loose bearings allegedly do a better job than caged bearings, caged are easier to work with, especially for headsets. So maybe think carefully before discarding the caged bearings that are in there, but you do you, you know

And last, there are some applications that call for ceramic or higher grade bearings, but you probably already know if you have one of those.

Other Thoughts

Fresh bearings with fresh grease is good. Change them more than once ever. If it has been a while, you may well notice the improvement. If you are getting bearings at all, get a whole bunch, because you will probably be doing this more than once, you may well lose one or two during the overhaul, and some suggest that mixing bearings from different production runs is risking greater variations in size, which is not ideal.

If you aren't in the habit of overhauling hubs, headsets, and bottom brackets, there are lots of good resources online and probably at your local library or bookstore to walk you through the process. Your bike will appreciate it, you will appreciate the difference in ride quality and parts longevity, and after the first couple of attempts you'll get pretty quick at it.

If you are in the habit of overhauling, you probably aren't reading this review anyhow, eh?

StarStarStarStarStar Ball bearings - good to have

by Pete from NJ
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

High quality bearings at a good price. Inexpensive enough to not have to consider re-using the ones already in place when you crack open your hub or bottom bracket. That is, IF what is in there currently / or what is called for by the manufacturer is not a higher quality /different substance, ie ceramic. Inexpensive enough to replace often enough to keep your bike running smooth and nice and not chew up expensive hubs and bottom brackets. Inexpensive enough to be worth going for this quality rather than lower quality (higher grade # = lower quality.) Big quantity - if you are changing bearings at all, you will probably do so every year or two, and especially if you have more than one bike or wheel or....

Cons

A nit - Bizarre shape bottle; why the pointy tip? I don't believe that you can cut the tip to allow the bearings out and still reseal with the little cap. Heck, one might argue that the pointy tip makes it easy to differentiate between a bottle of bearings and something else, I dunno.

And a possible con for loose bearings in general - while in theory they are better at doing what bearings are supposed to do than caged bearings, caged bearings are easier to work with.

Other Thoughts

There are many grades of bearings, and according to my research, these grade 25 are good enough for all but the most rarified applications. I like the large quantity so that if I drop one, it doesn't matter. Some online experts say that it is important to have all bearings that will be in contact with each other to be from the same production run, as tolerances can vary between runs. I have no idea if this is really true, or if so how crucial the difference is, but one can assume that in a given bottle, they are all the same production run.
