StarStarStarStarStar Bags

by
Product: Axiom Appalachian Panniers
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Inexpensive. Not cheap.

Cons

I've never seen or used other paniers so I don't know of any con's.

Other Thoughts

Used these for an over nighter on the Katy trail and they worked out fine. Hung them over a rear rack and secured with the attached little S hook straps. Have since used them biking into local festivals and to work on days when I need to carry some rain gear. I like a rack and the ability to carry stuff.

StarStarStarStarStar They have done all that I have asked them to do....!

Product: Axiom Appalachian Panniers
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

I use these all the time to haul canned goods, rice, sugar, and all sorts of other groceries; plus they haul my jacket, if I think my sweater may not be enough, and I think they are very good product. The zipper did go side ways once, but that was my fault; still as advertised, the zipper healed itself and still works fine! I've used these many times over the last years, and I am thankful and glad that I purchased them....!

Cons

The only con that has ever crossed my mind is, "I wished they were just a bit, and by a bit I not exactly sure, but they would have more width to them -- they are about 5 inches wide and another inch or so would make them even more viable, for all sorts of grocery shopping; some of the tall cans fit too tightly; other than that the size is perfect.....

Other Thoughts

Yeah they are good....!

StarStarStarStarStar Great Value Panniers

Pros

Rugged

Price

Cons

Limited capacity
Mounting and unmounting is time consuming

Other Thoughts

I bike commute to work. About 8 years ago I purchased a set of Axiom Appalachian panniers to help in transporting materials between work and home. Recently I broke the zipper to the right-hand bag by forcing it closed over a laptop. After doing some Internet searching, I concluded that the Appalachian 20 panniers were still my best choice. I ordered them from Modern Bike and was impressed by the service. I received an email that my order was received and shipped and a tracking number so I could follow the shipment. I have a Topeak bike rack and the Appalachians fit it as though designed specifically for that rack. The Appalachians have 2 large, main pockets and 2 smaller side pockets. In the side pockets I keep a small first aid kit, a plastic rain poncho, tire change and patch kit, multi-tool, and disposable plastic gloves to protect my hands when changing a flat. I have a mini-pump attached to the bike frame and carry a spare tube in the right main pocket of the panniers. On a typical commute to work, I carry in the main pockets a change of clothes, tablet, and miscellaneous items. On Mondays, I usually carry salad fixings and oranges for my lunches during the week

For my bike commute, the Appalachian 20s are almost ideal. They have reflective strips on the sides and rear, which is a good safety feature for my early morning commutes. I have never had a heel strike with these panniers, but that may depend on your bike frame/rack configuration. They are rugged. If I hadn't foolishly broken the zipper on my originals, I would still be using them. On the down side, these are not the panniers to chose for your 500 mile bike tour, nor are they the panniers to haul home groceries. They don't have the capacity. The two sides are permanently attached to each other: you don't have the option of mounting only 1 bag. The panniers attach to the rack by Velcro® strips fore and aft and s-hooks on the underside. This makes mounting and removing them something of a pain. This is not a problem for me since I seldom remove the bags. I pack everything in plastic grocery bags before filling the panniers. When I reach work, I pull out the grocery bags and rezipper the panniers. I could have paid twice what I paid for the Appalachian 20s and not have gotten a bag with more utility. If you are OK with their limitations, these are a great choice.
