Cheap And Convenient
by Jon P. of Patchogue, NY on August 1, 2016
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: average
The Cateye Velo 9 is everything you need in a simple bike computer. There is not much to dispute, as it does it's job perfectly, and uses a very simple interface. The basic functions are all there, with current speed always being displayed in large numbers. It is easy to understand, and very accurate once set up.
The mechanism to reset things such as average speed, and time ridden, also delete your current trip ODO. I learned this the hard way 800 miles into a 4000 mile ride, which was disappointing, but not heart breaking. It was a negligible issue, and the long trip ODO remained unchanged.
This computer is great for basic riding, as long as you aren't trying to do a ton of calculations and monitoring. The essentials are there. The only thing that I would change would be to individually reset different settings, rather than have most of them be on one function. Yet again, this wasn't debilitating at all. It still functions as a great basic computer, and I loved to be able to monitor certain things without going too overboard.

Some cycling computers can display a power reading, usually in watts. They usually require a separate sensor - in some cases a special hub or crank arm. A few will estimate the value based on speed, cadence, rider weight or other data. "Optional" means it can read from a separate power meter or sensor. "Included" means it is calculated by the computer or includes the neccessary sensor.
