Other Thoughts
I am 76 years old, use high cadence and need very low gears for the hills. My typical set up these days for road bike is 10 speed drive train, drop handlebar shifters, mountain triple using only middle and inner chain ring positions with 36x22. Rear is 10 speed 11x36 with 9 speed mountain derailleur. (Works with 9 or 10 speed, no problem.) 36 front and 11 rear limits speed by peddling to roughly 26 mph. Moving to 38 front, gives me few more mph. Shifting on front from 38 to 22 and back is fairly decent.
