High quality metal cable housing caps

Pros
These caps have O-ring seals and are made of metal. The O-ring seals keep the lubrication inside your derailleur cable housing. And since the caps are made of metal they don't split. Plastic caps can crack and fail, and when they do, they can allow some of the linear strands of compression-less shifter housing to deform and create shifting problems.
Cons
The O-ring seals can cause a bit of extra friction in derailleur cables so install carefully and check for excess friction and initial shifting problems.
Other Thoughts
Because derailleur cable housing has linear strands (not wound housing like brake cables) you need to cut derailleur cable housing carefully to insure the ends are square and not deformed. Linear strands prevent compression of the cable housing and ensure accurate shifting: On the other hand, the linear strands need to be carefully encased with alloy end caps to prevent any cable deformations that will result in poor shifting.
I've found that a cut-off disk in a Dremel type rotary hand tool gives an excellent cut to cable housing. In addition you might need to open up the inner plastic tube of the cable housing with a sharpened spoke and to repair any housing deformation and eliminate excess friction.
