StarStarStarStarStar From freezing fingers to warm hands

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Blocks wind and keeps hands warm. Plenty of room for braking and shifting

Cons

None

Other Thoughts

My husband is in his late 40s, bikes year round, and this is the first year he complained of his fingers being cold while fat biking in snow at 10 degreesish. I got him the large bar mitts as a Christmas gift and his hands are never cold now. Sometimes he even takes his winter gloves off while riding because his hands get too hot.

StarStarStarStarStar Bar Mitts are amazing

Love them! Have used them down to about 5 degrees with a pair of gloves underneath and my hands stayed warm. Very happy with them. I got large as to fit winter gloves inside.

StarStarStarStarStar Keeps you warm in the cold

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

These mitts allow me to ride in near zero temps with light gloves.
Practical, allow all needed movements around the grips and shifters, and create a warm bubble for hands. We had similar stuff when we grew up in the sixties but these are much better.

Cons

None I can think of

StarStarStarStarStar Essential for winter riding with some room for improvement

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Keeps hands warm, allows to safely operate brakes, speed / pedal assist shifter (Purion, Bosch, Gazelle 380 Plus speed), electric horn.
High quality materials enable easy adjustments.
Easy to install on a bike with end-bar mirror.
Unzipping allows for fast drying.

Cons

Mitten (left) blocks the Purion's display which diminishes the e-bike battery management on longer (~25 ml) winter rides (~20F).

Other Thoughts

I've solved the problem by making a cutout (and installing a plastic screen over it), and by adding few velcro ties for stabilizing the cutout position directly over the Purion's display.
During ride I choose the battery's electric warmer level (high, medium, low, and off) depending on the battery performance at a given temperature and distance.

StarStarStarStarStar Bar Mitts help with cold weather biking

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

These do keep your hands warmer, I'd say at least about 15 degrees. I have smaller hands and the large size mitts work well with gloves that are not too heavy. They're pretty easy to get my hands in and out of.

Cons

With the mitts, you can't see what gear you are in. I had to adjust the shifter positions a bit to work best with the mitts, although on my bike, hard to get it perfect for both up and down shifting. They're pretty snug when it comes to trying to use them with my warmest gloves, so extra large might be better for that.

Other Thoughts

Overall, I like having them and makes biking in cold weather more comfortable, but does add some minor inconvenience.

StarStarStarStarStar Amazing!

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat low

Pros

With the bar mitts I have been able to ride my bike all winter (never did that before). Before them, I was suffering severe pain from frozen fingers. Sometimes I even used the mitts without gloves. I can't say enough about how wonderful they are.

Cons

Only con is that I have a bike mirror and need to remove that and reinstall after putting the mitts on. Not a big deal though considering how amazing these mitts are.

Other Thoughts

If in doubt, buy these!

StarStarStarStarStar Warm is good!

Cons

Like them.

StarStarStarStarStar Better than expected

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Great product. Used several times in temperatures between 10 and 16 degrees. My hands stayed warm wearing my light riding gloves inside. There was also plenty of wind most of the times I have used them.

Cons

No disappointments for me. They work better than I expected them to.

StarStarStarStarStar Help keep the wind off

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

They do block the wind a fair bit, which helps a lot with keeping hands warm. I was able (painfully) to cycle about 45 min at about 10°F with a moderate, dry wind wearing two pairs of gloves. So maybe that's 20-30°F protection.

Cons

1. Warmth and protection is nowhere near the hyperbole I read on some other reviews.
2. You can't really take your hands in and out in a hurry, so I find I can't give hand signals when turning.

StarStarStarStarStar winter comfort

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Definitely improves finger warmth in cold weather. I no longer need to double glove unless the temps are below 20 fahrenheit for an extensive time. Makes the 10.5 mile daily commute comfortable.

Cons

ok so I cant use the bell very well. Just yell at people instead. There shouldn't be that many people out when its cold anyway.

StarStarStarStarStar its OK.

Pros

Works

Cons

Just better deals for the same design.

Other Thoughts

Would go for same brand just higher end solution.

StarStarStarStarStar Easy to use

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

keeps hands warm, easy to use

Cons

none I can think of

Other Thoughts

for those with raynauds, these are awesome. I use crab claw gloves in the winter and still get raynauds. These have ended my symptoms.

StarStarStarStarStar Worth it for me.

Warmer

StarStarStarStarStar Very Good

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Keeps hands warm and dry.

Cons

Tend to let water in if one is not moving forward (like if bike is parked)

Other Thoughts

I am a bike messenger and this was my best purchase in a long time. Need the road version for the road bike now!

One more, when it gets dry or warm through the day, you can just ride "on top" of the bar mitts. Very handy

StarStarStarStarStar Keeps out the cold without restricting movement.

by
Ownership: more than a year

Pros

Great Product. I use them every winter. In above-freezing wether I don't even need gloves. When it is below freezing I only need thin gloves, so I can always reach my keys and fold my bike without having to take off my gloves. On very warm days I can unzip it a bit to let more air in or hold the bike from outside.

Cons

I cannot see which speed I am in, but you can't have everything.

StarStarStarStarStar Ride year 'round

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

I ride comfortably all winter in New Jersey with Bar Mitts. I have ridden in windy and frigid days, to zero Fahrenheit, 25 mph winds and had toasty hands wearing only light gloves. These are the best investment in cold weather cycling gear I have ever made. I have Bar Mitts for my commuter bike, and for my road bike.

Cons

It will take some experience to get back in to your Bar Mitts when riding. They cover up my bell. You will have to plan a place to stow them on a mild afternoon commute, since Bar Mitts can be a little too warm when temperatures are above 40 degress F.

StarStarStarStarStar a great purchase for cold weather riding

by
Ownership: a few months

Pros

easy to install and get your hands into

Cons

don't really have any

Other Thoughts

These do exactly what they say. I have the mtb type with bar ends and they work great.

Bar Mitts

"Bar Mitts evolved from many years of hang gliding and cold winter bicycle rides. During the cold months, I used my hang gliding mitts on top of my bicycle handle bars. Hang gliding mitts are used on a straight steering control bar. As one can imagine, not being on the shifter and brake levers had its downfalls especially when it came to descents and emergency braking. I designed various Bar Mitts prototypes that enclosed the shifter and brake levers. I am so pleased that the final product is now available for sale. We hope you enjoy Bar Mitts and many warm rides."
