StarStarStarStarStar Cable Tip Replacement Using Park CN-10 Professional Cable And Housing Cutter

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Purchased with intention of using to do as high quality job as possible trimming off frayed vintage English 3 speed gear shift cable in preparation for installing replacement cable tip and for crimping the replacement cable tip onto the cable end. It did a great job trimming off the frayed part with a clean cut with absolutely no problem making cable ready for new cable tip.

Cons

It did not work for crimping on the new cable tip. I ended up using the cutting jaws of a small pair of Vice Grip pliers set so it does not close far enough to cut for crimping the new cable tip onto the cable

Other Thoughts

By using the Park Cable and housing cutter for cutting off the frayed part of the cable where it broke off and using the Vise Grip pliers for crimping on the replacement cable tip and excellent job was done leaving me with a gear shift that works like new. Doing the best possible job right took the Park CN-10 Professional Cable and Housing Cutter for cutting off the frayed cable part and a genuine Vise Grip Plier tool for crimping.

StarStarStarStarStar Just the thing to cut cables with.

StarStarStarStarStar Park Tool Cable Cutter and Crimper

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Cuts cable clean. Crimps end caps good.

Cons

Not so good at cutting housing.

StarStarStarStarStar High quality tool

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

High quality, should last forever, does a GREAT job on shifter cable & housing. Pretty good job on brake housing.

Cons

Still need dikes for wound brake housing, need a ‘spike’ (I use a nail) to round out cut housing.

Other Thoughts

It’s nice to have but I doubt i’ll Use it 10 times. In terms of money spent, I should just use dikes and pliers and put the $35 toward a repair stand.

StarStarStarStarStar Quality Cutter

Seems to be made well like Park Tools usually are. Haven't had it long enough to see how it holds up but this was the cutter I've seen most mechanics use.

StarStarStarStarStar Great cutters...

StarStarStarStarStar Clean Cutting

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Blade profile is great for cables
Easy to cut cables
Cable cut is always clean
Minimizes flattening

Cons

None

Other Thoughts

I tried using standard wirecutters before and it just crushed everything. I tried to use a Dremel before and it melted the internal sleeve. These Cutters work very well and are a much better tool for the job. Another great tool from Park. :)

StarStarStarStarStar To avoid the fraying

by
Ownership: one year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Makes clean cuts of cable without fraying

Cons

none

Other Thoughts

Again this was used for the brake job on my 1975 Royce Union 10 speed. When I would cut cable I used a pair electricians lineman pliers this would cause fraying. If your going to change brakes and cables on your old ten speed or any job where your working with cables get the right tool. This is the right tool.

Pros

Sharp so it makes clean cuts.
Plenty of leverage.
Comfy handles.
Has a cable end crimper.

Cons

Price.

Other Thoughts

Park makes quality tools. You get what you pay for and this is the right tool for cutting bike cables without fraying. They will last the average cyclist 10 years if not more, but only if your buddies don't snag them.

Pros

Does a great job trimming both housings and cables. Like all Park products, heavy duty tool, that seems like it will last a long time.
