StarStarStarStarStar Love the Tuggnut!!

by
Ownership: one year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Holds it tight day and night!

Cons

None

StarStarStarStarStar Best chain tensioner out there!

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Easy to install, easy to adjust, and easy to look at

Cons

Eh, nothing. Maybe a little heavy, but that just means it's heavy duty.

Other Thoughts

If your rocking horizontal drop out and need a chain tensioner go with this bomb proof Tuggnut from Surly.

StarStarStarStarStar Best chain tensioner ever

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Easily adjustable. Best looking and operating tensioner on the market. Well worth the extra cash

Cons

Slightly pricey but you get what you pay for

StarStarStarStarStar Screw/bolt should be a bit longer.

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat low

Pros

Looks awesome

Cons

Screw/bolt wasn’t long enough for my frame. Cranked it all the way and there was a few mils gaps between the “t” and the frame.

StarStarStarStarStar Great product. Too Expensive.

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: low

Pros

Easy to use. Stylish. Durable.

Cons

Expense.

Other Thoughts

This product is great. I no longer have to carry an extra wrench when I ride. It looks great and works well. My only complaint is that it is too expensive.

StarStarStarStarStar Provides tension as advertised. Meant for rear facing dropouts.

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

-great working tensioner. Converted a front facing dropout steel frame to a S.S.. Upon receiving the part I realized it's designed for rear-facing dropouts. Had to modify my frame a little bit to make it work, but it can be done if anyone's curious. Before I modified the frame, the pin that holds the tensioner plate was the main point of contact and because the pin was fairly narrow, the pressure applied to it bent the pin a little bit.

long story short, just get the other tensioner if you don't have rear-facing drop outs.

-Cannot attest to the usability of the bottle opener yet though.

Cons

tensioner pin can bend.

Other Thoughts

On the site, the lack of 360 degree pictures made it a little difficult to assess the viability of the part.

StarStarStarStarStar One of Surly's best products

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Durable and holds adjustments fine.

Fits most bike frames, even track dropouts.

Comes with a quick release adapter.

Cons

Knob is hard to turn the first time.

Other Thoughts

There are many products I don't like from Surly, but the tuggnut performs exceptionally and eliminates a problem that many people have when riding a single speed bike.

If you are like me and pedal really hard and are incredibly strong you will find that the torque will pull the wheel forwards and the chain will loosen.

This goes on the axle of the rear wheel and holds it so that it cannnot move in the dropouts.

This is especially important for quick releases since they are even less able to provide enough tension.

StarStarStarStarStar $30 paperweight

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

None

Cons

Doesnt work on bike frame. Sold individually, not worth $30 for one.

Modern Bike's response

Tuggnut according to Surly

Surly has written: "In our world, form follows function. In this case, the Surly Tuggnut chain tensioner keeps your wheel from slipping forward, in the drive side dropout, due to pedaling forces. It fits nicely into Surly horizontal dropouts, as well as most other rear-facing horizontals we've had our hands on. It is compatible with 9.5mm and 10mm solid and quick-release axles (using the included adapter washer). You can use it on both sides of your bike if you want that perfect balance, but you really only need one Tuggnut for the drive side of your bike."

StarStarStarStarStar Bottle Openin' Chain Tensioner

by
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Great bottle opener.. if you ride with bottles. I do, very rarely. It also spaces out your rear wheel if you need clearance for fenders.

Cons

It doesn't dispense beer

StarStarStarStarStar Tensioner for a single speed

by
Ownership: a few months

Pros

It's a rear tensioner for a single speed.
It works.
It also has a bottle opener.

Cons

Steel. Hefty
Larger than other tensioners, but it's Surly. Bombproof.

StarStarStarStarStar Single-speed/fixie life-saver

by
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Once you've got it adjusted to the proper position and opening, you'll never have to fuss with tensioning your chain again. So glad I purchased this and looks great!

StarStarStarStarStar Great item from Surly.

by
Ownership: several months
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Positive wheel location. Easy to adjust.

Cons

None.

Other Thoughts

I have used these on my Ogre and my Pugsley. I like the ability to set the wheel back slightly in the dropouts and the tugnut gives me positive adjustability.

StarStarStarStarStar great product

StarStarStarStarStar Surly tug nut

by

Haven't found any yet but I have a Surly karate monkey bike so the fit was perfect.

StarStarStarStarStar Does Job

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Makes chain tensioning easier on my Surly Cross Check Single Speed.

Very stylish. Stainless steel - won't rust.

Cons

Thought that for $30, I would get a pair. One works but a pair would have been nicer.

StarStarStarStarStar Tug Nuts!

by
Ownership: a few weeks
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Keeps my chain tight when the axle nuts could not!

Other Thoughts

It also worked to keep my Sturmey Archer three speed cable bracket straight and in line when tightening the axle nuts.

StarStarStarStarStar Simple, and straightforward (plus bonus bottle opener!)

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: average

Pros

Does exactly what it's supposed to do beautifully.

Cons

When using two (2) of these, the skewer length seems a little short. Nothing major.

StarStarStarStarStar High quality.

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Works great on my Surly.

Cons

Bottle cap feature is superfluous. I had to cut two of the four off for frame braze on access.

StarStarStarStarStar best chain tensioner

by
Ownership: a month
Tech Knowledge: high

well constructed, pretty stainless finish, works with bolt on 10mm or quick release axles

StarStarStarStarStar Fixed my problem!

by
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high

Pros

Very easy to install. Reduces all forward motion on the drive-side of my Rivendell Quickbeam.

Cons

I have a two ring/White Industries Dos freewheel set up, and switching between the 16 and 19T cogs isn't as convenient now. Forces me to stay in one gear more, so maybe that's a good thing...
