After 10,000+ miles and 6.5 years, the crankset on my Surly LHT wore down to where it needed replacement. I’m on my fourth chain and second cassette. I’ve upgraded to an XT cassette which should go the distance. I’m of the opinion that a crankset should last longer than mine did. It was the Andel RSC6 that came with the bike when I purchased it new. The chainrings are all aluminum alloy for weight savings, but on a Surly Long Haul Trucker, weight savings go unnoticed on this long distance freight hauler.
It only makes sense on a bike with a steel chain and steel cassette to have steel chainrings, so I shopped around for a crankset that would have these. I found this Shimano M371-L and it had the steel chainrings in the right tooth count and crank arm lengths that I required. I’m running a 10-speed cassette and the crankset is rated as a 9-speed, but it will work as long as I’m careful not to cross-chain. My bottom bracket is a Shimano UN55 sealed cartridge with a 118 mm square taper spindle and it works with the M371 crankset also.
It rankles me when bicycle component manufacturers render otherwise worthy tried and tested technologies obsolete while chasing the latest light weight trend du jour. Well, I’m going to continue to use my square taper cranksets - they just work!
Anyway, this Shimano M371-L crankset runs true, is quiet, shifts effortlessly, better than my all alloy Andel crank ever did, and is SO INEXPENSIVE! Now I know there are many Surly LHT owners out there who are looking for replacement cranksets, because the Andel has gone the way of the Dodo bird. I’m here to tell you this Shimano M371-L is the right choice. With steel chainrings, it should go many more miles than an alloy crank will.
