StarStarStarStarStar Nice wired computer and barometric altimeter

by
Product: Sigma BC 14.16 Wired Cycling Computer
Ownership: a few months
Tech Knowledge: high

Pros

Easy to use, looks good, works well, and has all the usual functions.

Cons

Thermometer is near the surface, reads high in sunshine. This will also throw off the barometric altimeter, as T is used as a correction factor. It also has a big display, but only shows your current speed plus one additional function. My old VDO device would show speed, altitude, and temperature all on one screen. I suppose this is progress.

Other Thoughts

The UI is a little weird and the one-sheet manual is initially hard to decipher. It also tends to show the details without explaining the big picture. For example there is "Altitude1" and "Altitude2" that you are supposed to set... but no explanation of what they are used for. (turns out these are two values stored for a quick reset when starting off from known locations!) All in all a nice compact device.

Pros

Simplicity of installation, ease of use, display clear. It generates a lot of data that helps you keep track of your workouts.

Wired Speed allows a sensor to transmit the bicycles speed via a connected cable to the computer.

Some computers come with built-in altimeters, which will display the current altitude. GPS enabled computers can often do this more accurately.

Temperature monitoring allows for a computer to tell you the current temperature.

Some cycling computers can display a power reading, usually in watts. They usually require a separate sensor - in some cases a special hub or crank arm. A few will estimate the value based on speed, cadence, rider weight or other data. "Optional" means it can read from a separate power meter or sensor. "Included" means it is calculated by the computer or includes the neccessary sensor.
