Just what I needed
by Alan B. of Winston-Salem , NC on July 23, 2018
Product:
Surly Hurdy Gurdy - Black
Ownership: a few weeks
Tech Knowledge: high
Pros
Allows my to run a single speed drivetrain on my old Trek with forward facing Campagnolo dropouts. Fits perfectly into dropout slots and has fine micro-adjust tensioning screw. Fairly lightweight construction and nice finish.
Cons
Pricy at $60 for a pair. End of tensioning screw not the perfect shape for interfacing with my dropouts. Maybe an Allen head tensioning screw would be better than the thumb screw design provided.
Other Thoughts
Highly recommend this product if you want to run single speed on a frame with forward facing dropouts!
This thing works!
by Gentry M. of Dallas, TX on May 11, 2018
Product:
Surly Hurdy Gurdy - Black
Ownership: more than a year
Tech Knowledge: somewhat high
Pros
Keeps the back wheel from slipping in the drop out
Cons
Another step you have to deal with when you are changing a flat tire. Be careful not to lose the little parts!
Other Thoughts
If you have a steel bike with horizontal drop outs (Fuji Touring, Windsor Tourist, Surley Straggler, etc), this gadget is for you. On steel bikes with long chain stays and horizontal drop-outs, you can actually cause enough flex in the chain stays to move the wheel when you stand up and hammer. When you add this along with a steel skewer, it will stop that nonsense and remove some the the flex in the rear end. Highly recommended...
Solved an aggravating problem
by Bikesbikesbikes on February 10, 2018
Product:
Surly Hurdy Gurdy - Black
Ownership: two months
Tech Knowledge: high
Pros
For years I've been having an issue with my Cross Check wherein the axle would slide forward in the drive side dropout under a hard load. Apparently this is common on this bike. It would cause the tire to rub the frame and I'd have to stop and fix it. Very annoying. I tried a few different skewers, including bolt style, and cranked them down hard, but the problem persisted. Upon finding out that Surly had made this part to address the problem I immediately bought it and instantly the problem is solved. It's great. Installation is simple and after a couple months it appears to be a solid and permanent solution.
Cons
Due to the design you inherently lose a bit of space in the dropout. When I'm touring with this bike, I run the axle all the way back for a longer wheelbase and more stability with a load on the bike. This is slightly impacted using this part. Really, it's a very small compromise on something I only do occasionally, but I guess worth mentioning. Well worth getting rid of the slippage issue, to be sure.
As a potential con, it does stick out a bit and could be damaged in a crash. It does seem like it could stand up to some abuse, so I'm not very worried about that.
Other Thoughts
It looks like this could work on other bikes with similar dropouts.
